Sunrises and sunsets are my thing – although I must admit to seeing more of the latter. More than once I have stopped in the middle of a room to watch its pink and purple stripes wave to me across the sky, showing off in a kaleidoscope of colors just before it bids me to rest for the night. I call out to the air, “Lord, you sure know how to say ‘good night’ to a lady.”
This morning, having awakened much too early I am drawn to verses about “rest,” and find myself in one of my favorite passages in Joshua 1. Joshua relays the message of the Lord by presenting the great promise of opportunity, “I will give you every place where you set your foot…” (v 3), I will never leave you nor forsake you.”(v5) But the part that spoke to me this morning was in verse 13 – “The Lord your God will give you rest by giving you this land.” Dictionary.com defines this gift of rest as “refreshing, relief or freedom from anything that disturbs.
By walking into audacious, bold possibilities by faith, you will indeed also be given rest because we walk according to the promise of God. It is more than thrilling to realize that opportunity and rest go together like the cycle of sunrises and sunsets; it is refreshing relief and freedom. Add to this that we have a genuine promise that He will never leave you, (Josh 1:5). and we should be up running to look for new lands to claim.
Jesus says, “Come to me you who are weary, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28) Salvation in Christ is the first step forward, but never the last. He is ready and waiting to walk along side you.
